HISTORY

Coris Capital, a major player in the pension fund industry, acquired the majority shareholding in Gryphon Imperial Unit Trust Managers Ltd in November 2002, with the main objective to obtain a pooling vehicle for pension and retirement funds under it’s management.  Together with Gryphon Financial Services, the Manager was restructured to consist of a passive and an active unit, with Coris managing the active unit and Gryphon the passive unit.  All the ‘active’ portfolios were changed to ‘multi-managed’ portfolios and Coris’ own multi-manager was appointed to manage these portfolios.  Restructuring of the portfolios is still in progress and should be finalised in the near future.  After a year of many changes in the industry, with new legislation being introduced, the name of the Manager was changed to Coris Capital Collective Investment Managers Ltd and the names of the Scheme and the funds changed to clearly define the new structure of the Manager.  Coris is responsible for the daily operations of the Manager including marketing, sales and development of the active unit, while Gryphon is responsible for the marketing, sales and development of the passive unit.

THE MANAGER

The Board of the Manager consist of chairperson Pankie Kellerman, head of Gryphon Financial Services and former Managing Director of the Manager, Johan Potgieter, Managing Director of Coris Capital and Neels de Jager, Executive Director of Coris Capital.

Part of the joint venture between Coris Capital and Sanlam Employee Benefits (see Home page for full story) the Coris Capital multi-management function was sold to Sanlam Multi-Manager International.  The Sanlam Group has been involved in multi management since 1998, mainly through managing international assets on global markets.  The South African Multi-Manager business grew out of the international competencies and was firmly established towards the end of 2001.  Sanlam Multi-Manager International (SMMi) is an investment managment business and dedicated to active multi-management investing.  It operates independently of the conventional investment management activities within the Group, both in terms of staff and invesment decisions.  SMMi manages assets in excess of R90bn via more than 20 different funds for over 40,000 clients.  SMMi is a globally integrated business with offices in South Africa and the United Kingdom (UK).  SMMi is the current Investment Manager of the active portfolios, headed by Gerhard Engelbrecht (BCom. Hons. Econ).  The multi-manager uses a range of well-established local investment managers in attempting to achieve an optimal level of risk and return.  The selection of investment managers is based on qualitative and quantitative research.

The Money Market Fund and Gryphon All Share Tracker Fund is managed by Jan Meintjes (CA (SA), CFA) and Abri du Plessis (MCom (Econometrics)) of Gryphon Asset Management.

The main focus of the Manager will be to accommodate institutional investors while the retail market will mostly be reached through Linked Investment providers.  The portfolios will however still be available directly to the retail market as in the past.
